While figures like Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Malcolm X are widely known as leading activists who vehemently fought against oppression. However, other figures may have gone under the radar like Georgia Gilmore: a cook, midwife, and activist who used food to feed and support the civil rights movement.

Rockland BOCES has gotten a half-million-dollar state grant to help disconnected, at-risk young adults in Spring Valley get back on a road to education and career preparation. The two-year initiative is targeted toward people 18 to 24 years old. It aims to create individualized programs to help participants obtain their high school diplomas, receive post-secondary education and transition into internships and jobs in their fields of interest.

Princeton, Yale, Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, Harvard are just some of the names of the most elite universities in the world known for their academic excellence, selective admissions, and renowned staff and curriculum. With a cumulative endowment of nearly $120 billion, these establishments are known for producing research and intellects that go on help the world. But with the promising future for students that these establishments are known to give, comes a checkered past of free labor from enslaved Africans that built the very prestigious foundation of them. While the idea of slavery as “a problem in the south” becomes a fallacy spread in American schools, and rhetoric told in the northeast to push away guilt, the horrendous abuse of enslaved Africans in the north is present everywhere, including institutions of higher learning. Below is a list of ten universities and colleges in the northeast United States that were created, built and capitalized by enslaved Africans.

This summer, 20-year accounting veteran Vivian London-Crooks is doing something about it, leading financial literacy workshops in Nyack and Yonkers for pre-teens.
London-Crooks, a Rockland parent and CEO of London's Tax Services in Mount Vernon, developed the "Millionaire Mindset" program to help kids develop strategies for handling money and making their money grow. The four-week workshop introduces children to investing and wealth-building.
